Reading the sky,
the oldest
of languages

Before writing, before clocks, humanity already looked up to seek meaning there. Here is that journey — from the first standing stones to artificial intelligence.

Since the dawn of humanity, the sky has been our first map, our first calendar and our first mirror. Every civilization, on every continent, sought in it both bearings and answers.

Before writing · ~4800 BCE

The first stones turned toward the sky

Long before the first cities, communities of the Nubian desert were already raising stone circles. At Nabta Playa, in present-day southern Egypt, slabs were aligned with the summer-solstice sunrise — the moment the monsoon rains arrived.

This site, nearly two millennia older than Stonehenge, is considered one of the oldest known astronomical alignments in the world.

Mesopotamia · 2nd–1st millennium BCE

The cradle of astrology

In Mesopotamia, the Babylonians recorded the sky on clay. The “Venus tablet of Ammisaduqa” — logging the planet's appearances over 21 years — dates in its original version to the mid-17th century BCE.

Their star catalogue MUL.APIN, compiled around 1000 BCE, lists dozens of constellations. It is from this tradition that the twelve-sign zodiac emerged around the 5th century BCE, later inherited by the Greeks.

Ancient Egypt

A star to herald the flood

For the Egyptians, the sky set the rhythm of life. The heliacal rising of Sirius — the star Sopdet, its first reappearance at dawn — coincided with the annual flooding of the Nile and opened the new year.

Around this event a 365-day calendar was built (twelve months of thirty days plus five added days), and the stars were grouped into “decans” to measure the hours of the night.

China · Shang dynasty, ~1250–1046 BCE

The sky carved in bone

China holds one of the longest observation traditions in the world. The earliest astronomical records appear on “oracle bones” — turtle plastrons and ox scapulae — carved under the last Shang kings.

They contain the oldest known mentions of a solar eclipse and a comet, at a time when celestial phenomena were read as messages addressed to those in power.

India & Mesoamerica

The same gaze, everywhere on Earth

The need to read the sky knows no borders. In India, the Vedic texts describe the nakshatras, the lunar stations that mark the Moon's course.

On the other side of the world, the Maya recorded in the Dresden Codex remarkably precise tables of the cycles of the planet Venus — proof of the same fascination, born independently.

At the origins, astronomy and astrology were one and the same

Observing, calculating, interpreting, predicting: for millennia these were the gestures of a single body of knowledge. The split came much later.

Images come from open-access collections (NASA, The Met). Dates of Mesopotamian antiquity depend on the chronology adopted (high, middle, low); the dating of Nabta Playa and the interpretation of the oracle bones are still debated among specialists.
